The Course

The Level 2 Certificate for Dog Grooming Assistants is aimed at people new to the industry. 

It is an important grounding in learning the fundamental basics to working in a grooming salon.

  • What You Study

    The Level 2 Dog Grooming Assistant (7863-02) qualification covers the skills the learner will need to progress to work as a Dog Grooming Assistant. Mandatory content covers:

    • Preparing and grooming dogs prior to bathing
    • Bathing of dogs
    • Drying dogs and preparing a dog for styling
    • Carrying out trimming of a dog’s coat to prepare for styling
    • Moving and lifting dogs 
    • Maintaining the cleanliness and biosecurity of the dog grooming environment
    • Professional conduct 
    • An introduction to anatomical features, breed characteristics and behaviour of dogs


  • Entry Requirements

    Enthusiasm and commitment are vital for this course.

    You do not need to be working in a grooming parlor to apply for this course.

  • Duration

    The course will run one day per week for 30 teaching weeks. Please note that this course runs thorughout the year, not just term time.

  • How You’re Assessed


    The assessment for this qualification will require you to achieve:

    A theory exam which will cover the knowledge and understanding within the qualification and a synoptic assignment which requires the learners to identify and use effectively in an integrated way an appropriate selection of skills, techniques, concepts, theories, and knowledge from across the content area.


  • Progression

    People who take this course could go onto progress to the City and Guilds Level 3 Dog Grooming Diploma.

  • Careers

    Upon completion of this course, students can work as a Dog Grooming Assistant. 

  • Equipment Required

    • Overalls / protective clothing – recommendations will be discussed at the first session
    • Grooming scissors – recommendations will be discussed at first session
    • Sturdy shoes or boots, e.g. walking boots. Not trainers.
  • Cost

    The maximum fee would be £895 per person. Depending on your personal circumstance you may be entitled to funding towards your course fees. This will be discussed with you once an application has been submitted.

    Once you have been offered a place on the course a 20% deposit (£179.00) will be needed to secure your place.
