The course

Are you looking to start a career within the countryside and game industry? This specailist course can help. It has been developed in consultation with employers and professional bodies.

You will develop knowledge, understanding and technical skills that employers will need from you entering the sector in the coming years.

Course Information

  • Principles of wildlife populations, ecology and conservation
  • Estate skills
  • Deer management
  • Pest and predator controlS

  • Stalking and shooting deer
  • Work experience and employability skills
  • English and Maths, as required

You will need four GCSEs at grade 4 or equivalent, preferably including English and Maths, or a relevant Level 2 qualification. One satisfactory reference is also needed.

Work experience forms a large part of the study programme with learners needing to complete over 300 hours off-site work experience. This has to be undertaken in an area related area to your main qualification and learners are expected to secure this prior to commencing the course if possible.
There are three main forms of assessment to be aware of: external, internal and synoptic.
  • Warm clothing and hard-wearing trousers for outdoor practicals
  • Waterproof trousers and coat
  • Steel toe capped boots, wellington boots and walking boots
  • Work gloves
  • White laboratory coat for lab-based practicals
  • Stationery including pens, pencils and notepads
  • A folder to organise your work
On completion of this qualification, you will have obtained the skills, knowledge and understanding to progress on to a higher level supervisory or degree level qualifications, e.g.FdSc Wildlife and Conservation Management or FdSc Ecology and Environmental Management.
Work in game-keeping, deer management, as a game farmer, in pest control and many more.
