Are you passionate about horses and equestrian careers? At Bishop Burton College in East Yorkshire, we offer outstanding equine education across college level courses, apprenticeships and higher education programmes. Whether you’re just starting out or aiming for a professional career in the equine industry, our equine studies provide the skills, experience and hands-on training you need.

Our equine courses combine practical riding, horse care, coaching, equine therapy and rehabilitation, and are supported by industry-leading facilities and expert tutors.

Study Equine at Bishop Burton College

At Bishop Burton College, our equine department provides a wide range of study options for students aged 16 and over, including:

Full-time and Part-time College Courses

  • Level 1 in Land-Based Equine Studies – an introductory course to develop essential horse care and handling skills
  • Level 2 Technical Certificate in Equine Care – build practical competence and broaden your equine knowledge
  • Level 3 in Equine Management – prepare for equestrian careers including riding, coaching, welfare and yard management

These courses blend classroom learning with extensive practical experience in our equine centre, giving you the confidence and competence employers look for.

Apprenticeships

Get hands-on experience while you work and train. Our equine apprenticeships include:

  • Level 2 Equine Groom Apprenticeship
  • Level 3 Senior Equine Groom Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships allow you to earn while you learn, combining workplace hours with structured training at college.

Outstanding equestrian facilities

Located in Bishop Burton, East Riding of Yorkshire, our Equine Centre is one of the best in the UK for both study and competition. You’ll benefit from:

  • Multiple indoor and outdoor arenas
  • Cross-country courses
  • Equine therapy and rehabilitation facilities
  • Practical yards and horse care environments

These facilities allow students to gain real-world experience and develop practical skills that employers value.

Theory and practice

Our equine courses combine classroom-based learning with hands-on practical experience, helping you build the knowledge, confidence and skills needed for a career in the equine industry.

Alongside your studies, you’ll gain valuable real-world experience by supporting the prestigious equine events hosted at Bishop Burton College, as well as through industry work placements that give insight into professional yards and equestrian environments.

You’ll also have opportunities to take part in study trips in the UK and overseas, giving you a broader understanding of the global equine sector. Previous trips and experiences have included major events such as Badminton Horse Trials and the Horse of the Year Show, along with international visits to Austria and Texas — giving students unforgettable learning opportunities beyond the classroom.

Riding and competition

As a Bishop Burton student, you’ll have access to free training with the British Horse Society, helping you develop your riding skills and gain recognised qualifications alongside your equine studies.

If you’d like additional riding opportunities — or you’re studying on a non-riding course — you can join our riding club, giving you extra saddle time and the chance to build confidence in a supportive environment.

Talented riders may be invited to apply for our Equine Academy, where you’ll receive expert coaching and tailored support designed to help you progress to high-level competition and reach your full potential as an equestrian athlete.
