Senior Men's Rugby Academy

The leading rugby union college in East Yorkshire for aspiring players.

The Bishop Burton College Men’s Rugby Academy has been involved in BUCS rugby for over a decade and in that time, we have had varying levels of success with consecutive promotions culminating in 3 seasons in Premier North 1 which was a great experience for those students involved at the time. The team currently operates in the Northern Tier 1. The games are always challenging against universities such as Liverpool, Durham, Northumbria.

We have had some notable success, winning successive promotions from 2009 until 2015 and then claiming the BUCS Rugby Union trophy in 2016. There have been many individual successes, with a number of former students going on to professional and international rugby honours.

Rugby training

Players are provided with a high-quality programme balanced with their academic commitments.

In a normal week, you will receive:

  • Three on-field sessions, which encompass individual, unit and team skill development
  • Three strength and conditioning sessions
  • Full time medical support
  • Video analysis
  • Team meetings
  • Various additional 1-2-1 sessions to improve your knowledge and performance in the game

Medical Support

To support all of our academy teams both on and off the pitch, players have access to our medical team. This includes Graduate Sport Rehabilitators, Sports Therapists, and a dedicated Strength and Conditioning Coach who works with players in the gym.

Our medical staff have a wide range of experience across various levels of sport, including professional, semi-professional, and amateur. Players who use the medical department receive tailored rehabilitation plans and support to help them recover from injury.

We also use advanced equipment to aid with treatment and rehabilitation:

  • GameReady Pro 2.0: This machine uses cold therapy and compression to help reduce swelling after an injury.
  • ActivForce 2: This device gives live feedback on how much force a player can produce during movement. It helps the team decide when a player is ready to return.
  • VALD Force Plates: These plates also provide live data on how much force is produced, which helps the medical team adjust recovery plans and assess return-to-play readiness.
  • Blood-Flow Restriction Cuffs: These cuffs allow players to train at 20% of the weight normally required to allow them to see improvements. This aids with the recovery process whilst reducing the risk of further injury.

All of our medical staff are registered with their governing bodies (BASRaT or SST) and hold current Pre-Hospital Trauma qualifications, ensuring players receive the highest standard of care on the pitch when needed.

Dedicated accommodation for the squad

Our on-site student accommodation is the perfect place to get to know your new teammates. We have dedicated accommodation for our men's rugby players so that you can stay focused on your training and your studies. Our academic and sports facilities are just a stone's throw away and you'll have free access to our gym.

Being a residential student is recommended, but not essential.

Scholarships

Scholarships are also available to help the right candidates to succeed.
