The course

Are you looking to further your career in the horticulture industry? This apprenticeship could be perfect for you.

As an apprentice you will be in a position of responsibility in your role at work. You will supervise staff and the plan the maintenance, care and appearance of sports surfaces.

Your work environment may be in athletics, bowls, cricket, croquet, football, golf, hockey, equestrian events, rugby league and union, and tennis. Venues include public parks, sports clubs, schools, first class stadia, training facilities and golf courses.

Course Information

  • Develop your knowledge, skills and behaviours for employment and future career progression within the sports ground industry.
  • Health, safety, environmental and employment legislation and regulations
  • Plant, soil science and plant growth regulators
  • Principles of surfactants for maintaining sports turf
  • Control weeds, pests, diseases and disorders
  • Preparation of playing surfaces
  • Basic design layouts of irrigation and drainage
  • Calculate precipitation rates
  • Gather agronomic and playability data
  • Renovation and establishment of a sports turf facility
  • Train and mentor staff

GCSE at grade 4/C in English and maths are preferred. You must also pass an initial assessment, secure work as an apprentice in a relevant role and have one satisfactory reference.

You will learn through a range of practical and theory-based lessons. On occasion lessons may be delivered online to support your learning and progress.

You will be released from work one day per week to undertake training at the college.

You will be employed within the horticulture sports industry, working 30 40 hours per week.
You will be assessed through end point assessment (EPA) and graded pass, merit or distinction.
  • Stationery i.e., pens, paper
  • An electronic device such as a laptop to access online learning
  • Boots, heavy duty gloves and appropriate outdoor wear
Higher-level apprenticeships e.g., Golf course manager.
You may progress within the industry to a higher-level position such as head groundsperson, head greenkeeper, pitch manager.
