Welcome to Sport and Exercise Science Research Centre

Our experienced team, extensive facilities, established sporting academies and professional links support a breadth of research in all aspects of sport and exercise sciences. The sport and exercise science team support students in developing their skills in research throughout their degree in preparation for undertaking their independent research project.

Improving human performance research focuses on the physiological and psychological development of athletes to support peak performance. Areas explored include training, recovery and competition preparations to fully understand and support the psychological skill development, athletic growth, recovery, injury prevention and coaching practice. Recent research conducted includes; the perceptions and reporting behaviours of athletes in relation to concussive injuries, the impact of recovery strategies for improved performance and an exploration into shared leadership within youth sport coaches.

Our research into exercise and physical activity seeks to investigate and provide evidence-based solutions to support adherence to a more active lifestyle for improving the health and wellbeing of the general population. The research explores a range of concepts from the implementation of exercise-based interventions for improving physical and mental wellbeing, to the impact of gender of physical activity rates and enjoyment and more recent investigation into the change in physical activity rates during the first UK lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Student and staff research is support through extensive facilities offered across the Bishop Burton Campus that includes a Sport & Exercise Science Centre containing a human performance laboratory, strength and conditioning and rehabilitation suites, sports and exercise therapy clinic space and massage stations. The campus is also home to six high quality grass pitches, 4G all-weather sports pitch, 40 station high spec commercial gym and free weights area, sprung floor dance studio, 7k cross country track, two sports halls, two plunge pools and a performance analysis/training room with projector and smart board.

In addition, application of research to answer real-world issues can be achieved through the high-performance academies onsite that support student-athletes in football, rugby (league & union), netball and equestrianism at high standards of competition. Collaborative working with our equine performance research team allows the exploration of rider fitness and performance and the application of sport and exercise science principles to the equestrian athletes to inform coaching practice and athletic development.
