British Egg Academy to be Launched at Bishop Burton College
Bishop Burton College are launching a brand-new course, ‘British Egg Academy’, delivered in partnership with Morrisons’ own integrated egg operation, Chippindale Foods, as well as twenty-eight specialist organisations from the egg industry. This Academy is currently recruiting students to start in January 2021 and is aimed at those wanting to join the UK’s fastest growing protein sector – eggs.
The egg industry alone is worth over £1 billion to the UK economy, but despite this bright future, the egg sector is facing a shortage of young people coming into the thriving industry. Richard Pearson, head of agriculture at Chippindale Foods, said: “Young people can join an industry with huge expansion and benefit from rapid career progression and varied opportunities, as well as feeding the nation with a product that is very ‘in vogue’”.
Working in collaboration with companies and organisations across the egg-laying industry, the course, a Level 2 diploma in Agriculture, will commence in January 2021 for students aged 16+. The British Egg Academy will cover a wide range of topics including environmental and land-based business, introduction to farm animal production, animal and plant biology and much more. A range of educational visits to farms, a hatchery, feed mill, packing centre, retail operations and veterinarians will be available to the students throughout the year.
Charlie Rook’s family egg farm who is one of the Academy partners, based 6 miles away from Bishop Burton College, said; “I think you learn from doing and seeing these enterprises first hand. By being on-farm, students will get a better idea of what it involves and what the job entails.” He continued to explain how his East Yorkshire family farm will be used by the students; “Students will shadow the hen managers... learning about good husbandry, write the daily ‘flock document’ to check feed and water, and learn about egg counting to monitor production…”.
Bishop Burton College is a specialist land-based further and higher education provider, and is ranked among the top performing sector specialist colleges and universities nationally. The College prepares students for industries such as agriculture, animal management, sport and equine as well as engineering, construction and public services.
