One student said: “Wardens have helped me with my confidence and independence. I love it here.” Another described the wardens as “like second parents to me”.
Parents were equally positive, with one commenting that residential staff are “like an extended family”.
The inspection team highlighted the range of enrichment opportunities available throughout the week and at weekends, from team sports to subsidised overseas expeditions, helping students broaden their horizons and enjoy a richer experience of college life.
Staff across student services were praised for providing vital support during times of challenge, ensuring students remain connected to their studies and wellbeing support whenever needed.
Ofsted found that the college’s safeguarding practice is exemplary, with inspectors noting a highly proactive and innovative approach.
There are 150 under-18 residential students at the Bishop Burton’s campus, with a further 24 at our sister college, Riseholme College, in Lincolnshire.
Inspectors found both campuses work as a unified team, underpinned by strong designated safeguarding lead structures and close collaboration with external agencies.
They highlighted the use of virtual reality technology, advanced firewalls and web-filtering systems, as well as highly effective electronic record-keeping.
They also commended the popular “15-minute bite-sized” safeguarding briefings for wardens, describing them as an example of practice that could be shared nationally.
Security staff were recognised for their meaningful relationships with students, reflecting the same values as the wider team.
Leadership and management were also judged Outstanding, with inspectors noting the scale and complexity of the college’s operations across two sites and praising the collaborative culture that ensures the experience for residential students remains consistently high.
The college’s five values were found to be “tangible and embedded,” shaping an open, transparent environment where staff feel supported and valued.
Governors were also recognised for their commitment and visibility within the residential community, and inspectors highlighted the effective use of data to monitor and enhance residential students’ experiences.
