“Hi, I’m Mel Watson, the Senior Higher Education Academic Lead here at the University Centre Bishop Burton.
Let’s explore your programme options…
Higher National Certificates (HNC)
These are 1 or 2 year programmes, equivalent to the first year of a bachelor’s degree. They’re a great option if you want to make sure the subject’s right for you, before you commit to something longer term. They’re also a great stepping stone to get you on to the next level of study or gain new skills to get a promotion.
Higher National Diplomas (HND)
Similar to, but at a slightly higher level than HNCs, they focus on vocational and industry specific skills. HNDs prepare you for industry, but if you want to continue in education, they are a great springboard for the next level up.
Foundation Degrees
These are studied over 2 to 3 years. They’re mostly technical and relate to specific industries, Work-based learning included, so it’s a choice if you know the career you want. You can also ‘top-up’ a foundation degree with one more year of study to gain a full bachelor’s degree.
Bachelor’s degrees
These are traditional 3 year degrees – you can either choose a BA – which is a Bachelor of Arts, or a BSc – a Bachelor of Science.
Master’s Degree
These are a 1-2 year programme that you study after becoming a post-graduate. This is where you really specialise in your chosen subject, quite literally becoming a master in your field. Like many colleges and universities, we offer lots of different programmes at all of these levels.
Learn more about our programme options at our dedicated Higher Education open event on Saturday 4th December, 10am – 1pm.
