Student Blog: Clare - MSc Applied Animal Behaviour and Training

16 Mar 2022 | University Centre

Why did you choose this programme?

Because distance learning over two years suits my family and work commitments. As an existing UCBB student continuing on from the canine courses, I was familiar with many of the lecturers and the learning platform so I was confident the course would suit my needs as a mature student.

What do you enjoy most about your programme?

What are your favourite parts of studying at the University Centre?

Pre-covid I used to enjoy meeting my fellow students at the block teaching days. I’ve made some truly good friends through my studies at UCBB and, whilst we may be geographically distant, we support each other in so many ways.

What are your ambitions after completing your programme?

Ultimately, I would like to complete the qualification requirements to become a clinical animal behaviourist specialising in pet dogs. However, in the short term, I’ll continue to run my own business as a dog trainer and behaviourist and enjoy developing my skills and knowledge through a variety of CPD courses and conferences.

Do you have any tips for new students?

Plan your time: don’t leave assignment writing till the last minute! Talk to your lecturers, ask for their help when you need it and use the LRC resources. Get to know your fellow students even if your workload is time consuming – their support will keep you going when you feel like giving up.

What is your most memorable achievement or experience during your studies at UCBB?

There are a lot of memories to sift through!! Most memorable, probably the presentations at block week in first year FdSc Canine Behaviour and Training, and the amazing graduation ceremonies at Beverley Minster. The most memorable achievement was achieving 95% in an MSc practical training module assessment – I know some who have achieved higher but I worked hard for it and did a happy dance in my kitchen when I got my result!

It has changed my life and my outlook on the whole world of dog ownership, training and behavioural assessment. I wouldn’t have missed it for the world, despite the tears shed over some assignments!
