I was initially drawn to the programme due to the veterinary aspect of the course as my heart has always belonged in this particular field. However, after three years of study, I have been able to expand my skills set further in different areas, such as business management and laboratory knowledge.
What do you enjoy most about your programme?
It is quite hard to pick just one! Despite completing the last half of my degree in the midst of a pandemic, I have really enjoyed the integration of practical work throughout the course. I have also enjoyed the fact the programme is predominately assessment based, as I have previously struggled under exam conditions. Despite this, overall, I have to say my favourite aspect has been the relationships I have built with not only fellow pupils, but staff members also.
What are your favourite parts of studying at the University Centre?
As the University Centre Bishop Burton is not as large as other universities, I believe this is such an advantage when it comes to your studies as you are able to receive one-to-one tutoring and in-depth feedback on your work regularly. You also become friends with everyone on your course which is a bonus!
What are your ambitions after completing your programme?
Initially, I intended to do a graduate-accelerated entry course into veterinary science. However, I have thoroughly enjoyed the laboratory aspect the course has offered, so I hope to become a laboratory scientist within the animal field!
Do you have any tips for new students?
Ask your tutors for help if you need it! I believe I have built up such strong relationships with my tutors because I am in their inbox every 5 minutes, but they are always there to help with any issues you have, be it academic related or personal.
What are the highlights of the campus?
The setting of the campus is located within the heart of Bishop Burton, which means you are on the doorstep of a lovely rural village which is integrated throughout the campus. There is a large range of areas to eat, which accommodate for different dietary requirements, and multiple study areas. The animal unit means you are able to conduct studies on such a wide variety of animals, from otters to lemurs!
What is your most memorable achievement or experience during your studies at UCBB?
I have never been any good at presenting in front of people, however, due to the support of my tutors and my classmates, I am a lot more confident within this area. This is an achievement for me, as not only have I overcome my fear, but I have gained a transferable skill which can be applied in my future career aspects.
Any comments you would like to add about your time at UCBB
The University Centre is located in a building which is separate to the college. This building contains study areas and canteens which are primarily for higher education students, which allows you to work in an academic environment without disruption!
