Meet our Speakers

Roly Owers MA MSc VetMB MRCVS

Roly is a qualified veterinary surgeon and has been Chief Executive of the charity World Horse Welfare since 2008. He graduated from Cambridge University in 1992 and acquired his Masters degree in Nutrition from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in 1997. His previous veterinary roles included the Blue Cross and Royal Army Veterinary Corps.

Roly plays an active role in much of World Horse Welfare’s work supporting the horse-human partnership, and as a Director of the British Horse Council he regularly liaises on policy with Defra, the devolved administrations and Ministers. He also advises the International Equestrian Federation (FEI), the International Horse Sports Confederation (IHSC) and the British Horseracing Authority (BHA) on horse Welfare.

Roly is currently Treasurer of the British Equine Veterinary Association (BEVA), Chairman of the UK Equine Disease Coalition, a Director of the British Horse Council, a Board member of the European Horse Network, Chair of the International Coalition for Animal Welfare and an Executive Board Member of World Federation for Animals.

Dr Rachel White

A fully qualified lecturer at the University Centre Salford City College, having taught at Myerscough and Hartpury! Rachel is a post-doctoral researcher, studying musculoskeletal diseases in horses for over a decade! Her extensive work with the Veterinary medicine dept of the University Cambridge will allow for a really exciting talk on Osteoarthritis: A case of creaking joints and a lack of oil?

Emmeline Hannelly

Emmeline Hannelly has an MSc in Equine Science and is the Welfare Education Manager for The British Horse Society, the largest and most influential equestrian charity with 120,000 Members.

With years of practical experience, Emmeline is passionate about supporting and advising horse owners and carers on a wide range of issues. Emmeline has worked in the BHS Welfare team for over 14 years and during this time has helped to establish a number of campaigns including REACT Now to Beat Colic and #BeHorseAware. Emmeline’s team is responsible for the proactive welfare education work which includes Healthcare & Education Clinics (as shown in the photo) and Horse Health Days. Dr Hannah Butler-Coyne

Dr. Hannah Butler-Coyne is a Health and Care Professions Council Registered and British Psychological Society Chartered Clinical Psychologist working in both the NHS and private practice.

Within independent practice Hannah specialises in the application of clinical psychology in sport settings, supporting athletes and sportspeople to enhance performance, focus, confidence and/or manage mental health difficulties. Hannah provides consultation, assessments, specialist therapy, workshops and training within the sport setting.

Equestrian sport is one of Hannah’s specialist areas, with published research in the area and regular presentations at national conferences.

Hannah is currently en route to becoming one of a handful of Clinical Psychologists in the country dual trained in both the clinical and sport psychology domains. She is a Lecturer at the University of Central Lancashire, visiting Lecturer on a number of courses in various universities and colleges in the North West, regularly presents research at conferences and publishes work in academic journals..

Lisa Ashton
