Bishop Burton College to launch Women’s Football Academy starting in September 2022

17 Jun 2022 | College

Bishop Burton College are delighted to announce the expansion of their current outstanding sporting academy offer, with the launch of a Women’s Football Academy.

This will see the introduction of an Under 19s female football and educational programme from September 2022 for players who aspire to the highest level.

In support of this programme delivery, the college has been accepted into the newly formed English Colleges Football Association (ECFA) Women’s Performance League. As the only recognised 11-a-side competition within the Association of Colleges (AoC) for females, it will be extremely competitive, with the college competing against well-established and successful teams such as Park View Academy, York College, Barnsley College and current national cup champions Gateshead College.

Director of Football James Bennett said “First and foremost, the ambition to start a Women’s Football Academy and be accepted into the ECFA performance league was centred around providing girls in Hull and the East Riding with the opportunity to play at the highest level possible. Bishop Burton College is now the only college in East Yorkshire operating at this standard and the programme created will provide a pathway to the senior Women’s game.”

James further commented “The longer-term vision for the Women’s Academy is to mirror the achievements of our Men’s Football Academy, who recently reached the finals of the ECFA National Cup Final. We are passionate about supporting and enabling females within the local area achieve similar sporting success; and are confident this new endeavour will help to further and create hugely rewarding opportunities and experiences.”

The Academy’s new provision supports The Football Association (The FA) strategy to increase participation in female football and retain more players. Women up to the age of 21 will be able to play in the performance league, which will open up further playing opportunities for those who also progress onto Higher Education at the college.

The first pre-season session for the Women’s Football Academy will be on Wednesday 20th July which is open to any female in Year 11 at school who has a passion for football.
