UK agriculture is just one of the sectors of the economy which, as well as contributing to the problem, has the potential to be an important part of the solution, reducing the use of fossil fuels, capturing carbon and generating clean, renewable energy.
As a specialist, land-based college with its own 360 hectare commercial farm, Bishop Burton College is well-placed to demonstrate farming systems which can make an important contribution to building a net-zero carbon economy. To that end, the college has set an ambitious target of making its farm net zero by 2030. This involves the development of precision farming systems which utilise environmental sensors and GPS technologies to variably apply seed, fertiliser and chemical inputs within the field in accordance with the crops exact requirements.
The Waterline Summit is for anyone with an interest in how we in the Humber can lead on the issue of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and protect our low-lying areas from the devastating effects of floods and increasingly erratic weather patterns.
The week-long e-exhibition will take place from Monday 19th – Friday 23rd October and will focus on the five ‘grand challenges’ the world faces in the battle against climate change: electricity & energy; agriculture; manufacturing and industry; transport and logistics; and building and people. It is a great opportunity to share ideas, best practice and to work together for this common purpose.
