This is a highly practical course that allows you to develop the core skills needed to work with animals within the animal care industry. You will learn how to care for a wide variety of animals at Bishop Burton College's specialist Animal Management Centre.

This course features a range of practical and classroom study and will provide you with the skills needed to continue on to the next level of study or go straight into employment.

Course Information

  • Introduction to wildlife and conservation
  • Animals in the wild and their main features
  • Assist with feeding and watering of animals
  • Assist with the preparation and maintenance of animal accommodation
  • Assist with the handling and restraint of animals
  • Assist with the exercise of animals

You will need a full Entry Level 3 qualification, or equivalent, or 3 GCSEs at grades 1-2, including Maths and English. A passion for the subject and one satisfactory reference are also required.

You will learn through a mixture of theory and practical sessions at Bishop Burton College.

One year full-time, normally in college three days a week.

You will undertake a supervised work placement with a college tutor.
You will be assessed through a mixture of coursework and practical assessments.
  • Folder with dividers to organise your work and assignments
  • Stationery including notepad for use in class, pens and pencils
  • College-branded blue kennel coat
  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including steel toe capped footwear (boots, shoes, or wellies)
  • Waterproof outdoor clothing and footwear (for work experience)
You can progress to one of the Level 2 Open Award in Animal Care or Horse Care courses at the college.
Volunteer or work as a Pet Shop Assistant, Kennels Assistant, Catteries Assistant, and many more.
