The course

A career in land-based engineering could be for you if you like to work as part of a team, working in the outdoors, enjoy problem-solving and are interested in developing your analytical and IT skills. Does this sound interesting? This course will start you off on the first steps on your journey to an exciting and rewarding career.

Modern land-based engineering is not just about building larger and more powerful tractors and farm machinery. You'll need skills in robotics, computer-based imaging, GPS technology, science-based solutions, climate forecasting, technological solutions, environmental controls and much more.

Although farming and food production is a major focus, the land-based engineering industry extends into everything from the countryside and forestry to sports-grounds and open spaces.

  • Fabrication, cutting and joining
  • Land-based vehicle electrics
  • Hydraulic systems
  • Land-based vehicle and machinery operation
  • Working in the land-based engineering industry
  • English and/or Maths (if not achieved at grade 4)

You will need GCSE Maths at a grade 4, GCSE English at grade 3, plus two other GCSEs at a grade 3. We will also accept applicants with a relevant Level 1 qualification.

You will be individually assessed as part of the interview process to determine suitability.

One satisfactory reference is also needed.

You will need to complete 150 hours of work experience.

  • Steel toecap boots
  • Safety glasses (optional)
  • Stationery such as pens, pencils and notepaper
Upon satisfactory completion of this course you will be able to progress to the Level 3 in Land-Based Engineering.
Work as a technician within the horticultural or agricultural machinery industry, such as in 4WD operation and maintenance, harvesting, ground care, cultivation and planting equipment. You could also work in the wider land-based technology field, including in renewable energy.
