Bishop Burton College launches brand-new T Level in Health qualification

12 Feb 2021 | College

Bishop Burton College has once again been selected to be one of the few education providers across the country to roll out phase two of the new T Level qualifications.

Head of Department for General Education at Bishop Burton College, Mike Ridley, spoke about the launch of the new qualification;

"We are delighted to be one of the first colleges in the country to offer the T-Level in Health. The T-Level qualifications are the future of education. It gives students who want to pursue a career in the health sector a fantastic opportunity to work extremely closely with industry professionals, while learning the most up to date industry content, skills and knowledge. We are extremely confident that students who enrol on the T-Level qualification will be in an advanced position to progress into further study or straight into employment."

The T Level in Health, which is the equivalent to 3 A Levels, offers an alternative way of learning with lots of fantastic hands-on practical experience gained along the way. It provides a perfect blend of learning, with students spending 80% of their time in the classroom and 20% working in industry. Students will spend at least 45 days in a meaningful industry placement.

The qualification runs for two years and has been specifically designed with employers and businesses to give students a real insight into working in their chosen sector, preparing them for a career with the practical skills and tools needed to succeed.

Students on the T Level in Heath at Bishop Burton will study both the key health core concepts needed for the Health industry, as well as specialising in the key concepts around supporting the adult nursing team. Students will work closely with the local NHS Trust to study a range of topics including; good scientific and clinical practice, providing person centred care, managing data and information within the healthcare sector, assisting registered health care professionals with clinical or therapeutic tasks and also infection prevention to name just a few. They will also specialise in the areas of assisting with clinical skills, with an individual's overall care and in supporting them to meet the activities of daily life. Mike Ridley spoke in more detail about plans for the future;

"As we are already working with the local Humber NHS trust and their superb ‘young health champions’ programme which gives students a unique insight into working with the NHS Trust, undertaking volunteering across a range of jobs. We are hoping to develop this link further with the introduction of a ‘Health Academy’ and provide students with the perfect platform to gain invaluable experience in the sector. There are exciting things happening with the Health curriculum here at Bishop Burton and we are looking forward to what the future holds."

Launched last September, the T Level in Childcare is also accepting applications to start in September 2021. Student Alex who started studying for a T Level in Childcare in September 2020 said;

"I chose the T Level Childcare as its placement based, whilst learning at the same time, I'm so happy with this course and I can’t wait for the head start it will give me and the doors it will open for my career. Placement is really enjoyable and gives a great insight in what working in education is like. I do a lot more than you think, I'm responsible for my own intervention group and plan my own activities. Since being on placement my confidence has grown massively, I love every minute of it and I'm so excited for my future career."
