Student Blog: Ellie - BSc Wildlife and Conservation Management

20 Mar 2021 | University Centre

I chose this course because I have always been interested in conservation but it was during my FdSc Animal Management and Behaviour when I took the Ecology and Conservation module that I decided to take the top up in Conservation.

I chose this college after a conversation with a lecturer on the Bishop Burton College stall at the Great Yorkshire Show. However, after looking round many other universities I felt at Bishop Burton I would have a more personal experience and not just a number in a lecture hall like at larger universities.

My favorite part of the course is ALL of it! Each module within my degree is interlinked and all feels like it holds an appropriate place in preparing me for a future in conservation.

I really hope that this course will lead me to make a difference in the future to projects that really matter.

Having the University Centre open every day 24/7 is incredibly helpful and beneficial to someone who does not own a laptop or computer. Also, the LRC staff are amazing and so helpful with any issues I have about journals or access. They are always fast with responding and problem solving, so a massive thank you and praise to them too.

The campus is incredibly beautiful and inspiring. There are places such as the eating outlets where you can be sociable, but also places such as the walled garden where you can spend some time alone if you need to just breathe.

The lecturers have been incredible during these incredibly difficult times. They have ensured fast responses to any problems we have faced because of COVID, degree or personal, and sustained a very high level of teaching online. I myself have struggled both mentally and physically with the online teaching and the isolation of lockdown, but all three of my lecturers have made me feel like I always have someone to talk to or ask for help if I need it.

Being able to live on campus with like minded people who are going through the same experiences as me. It really helps, especially being on a corridor with fellow third years, I think that is really important! The wardens are incredible, Steve especially. Nothing is too much of an ask and they are always there if you need help or just someone to talk to about something. The cleaners too, I cannot fault them during these incredibly difficult COVID times, they have made us feel safe and cared for. The lateral flow testing staff again need immense praise, putting themselves on the front line to ensure everyone on site is safe, massive thank you to them.
