Student Blog - Ebony Hepworth, BSc Sport Exercise Science and Health

12 Jul 2020 |

I have studied sport throughout my academic years, with the option of GCSE Physical Education and BTEC Level 3 in Sixth Form, and now in my final year of the BSc Sport, Exercise Science & Health degree at the University Centre Bishop Burton.

I chose Bishop Burton as I was amazed by the facilities and systems that they had here in place regarding sport and were extremely interested in being a part of this. They have some of the best facilities to play sport on and some of the latest technology and equipment to use.

The course has allowed me to have freedom with assessment content and focus but clear guidelines on what is expected of you. The programme included both classroom-based and practical learning, with trips to different locations with some of the best technology so you can gain hands-on experience. Even on-site at Bishop Burton, there is a range of excellent equipment that as a student you get access to such as the science labs and the fitness facilities, so you don’t even have to leave the site. The lectures are fun and engaging, with different tasks set to help develop my knowledge and understanding of different modules.

From my experience here the tutors are always eager to help, whether that is with assessments, career pathways, or just general help, which I found very beneficial in my university experience here. This support is provided both in person and through email, responding to emails both quickly and effectively in order to help myself and other peers. They provide and offer some of the best opportunities, the tutors are determined to find links to professional teams coaches to help gain experience for all students which I found very beneficial.

When I finish my degree at Bishop Burton, I would like to go into teaching physical activity by doing my teacher training degree and then hopefully progress within the career I enjoy. A PE teacher has always been my dream job ever since starting secondary school, being able to teach physical activity on a daily basis and pass on my knowledge is something I have always liked the sound of. I gained help on career options through speaking to both my tutors and the career advisor here at Bishop Burton who was both very helpful in providing me with new information on how to get where I want to be.

One top tip for starting university for me would be to put as much time and effort into assessments as possible and reading as much as possible as it helps broaden your knowledge for each assessment. When I started my studies here, I wish I started my first year in the way I felt in both my second and final year as I believe I would have gained more benefit from my assessments and lectures.
