Daniel heads for national bricklaying final

19 Oct 2021 | College

A construction student at Bishop Burton College near Beverley is getting ready to take on students across the UK in the finals of SkillBuild UK.

Daniel Greenwood, a first-year apprentice, won the SkillBuild UK bricklaying regional heat in June and is now set for the finals in Norfolk which take place over a week in November.

Eighteen-year-old Daniel from Burton Fleming joined the college to study for a Level 1 Diploma in bricklaying. Course Manager for Construction Jeremy Hara said:

“Because of Daniel’s outstanding skills, great attitude and attendance record he was able to find an employer to offer him work experience and this went so well that he went on to being offered an apprenticeship. It is exceptional for a student to achieve what Daniel has in his first year.”

The SkillBuild competition is managed by the Construction Industry Training Board in collaboration with WorldSkills UK and the national finals take place at the National Construction College (East) over the week of Monday 15 – Friday 19 November. The bronze, silver and gold winners will be announced at a ceremony hosted by TV presenter Steph McGovern from her Packed Lunch studio on Friday 26 November.

Bishop Burton College offers diplomas in bricklaying and plastering, with students developing their skills in the college’s purpose-built construction workshop. They gain further experience on real building projects and work experience placements, as well as during competitions, and many secure work before they have even finished their course.

Bishop Burton College's Construction department has excellent industry links, working with companies including Beal Homes, British Gypsum, Hobson and Porter, Ibstock, MKM Building Supplies and Persimmon Homes.
