Bishop Burton Graduate honoured as ‘Volunteer of the Year’ by Humberside Police

29 Sep 2023 |

A graduate of University Centre Bishop Burton has been recognised by Humberside Police as Volunteer of the Year. BA (Hons) Contemporary Criminology graduate Katie Cobb was honoured at the Excellence in Policing awards on Wednesday 13 September for her outstanding dedication and invaluable contributions to the organisation.

Katie Cobb joined the ranks of Humberside Police in 2020 as a volunteer at the Clough Road custody suite. Despite her demanding family responsibilities and ongoing studies, Katie demonstrated extraordinary dedication to assisting her colleagues at Humberside Police.

In her role, Katie was tasked with optimising the efficiency and safety of the custody environment. She conducted comprehensive audits of equipment in custody stockrooms, ensuring a constant supply of resources and liaising with the business centre for timely orders.

Throughout her tenure as a volunteer, Katie also undertook a multitude of tasks that have significantly contributed to Humberside Police's progression as a force.

Among her listed successes working at the unit, Katie was commended for her instrumental role in coordinating the complex logistics of Operation Lagos, a 55-day custody suite shutdown at Clough Road. The operation included a subsequent relocation to Headquarters during essential maintenance, where Katie was pivotal to the project's success.

Superintendent Tindall, who nominated Katie for the award, said: “Katie is enthusiastic and passionate about her role and contribution to policing; she is committed to Humberside’s ambition to make our communities safer and delivered this through assisting processes that support to keep the most vulnerable detainees safe and advised when they come into custody.

“Katie has been invaluable, she has taken on tasks that have enabled the Sergeants and Inspectors to focus on threat, harm and risk. She has shown incredible support to the staff working within custody, she will do anything to help others. Katie deserves some recognition for all that she does for others and for Humberside Police. We are very grateful for all she has done with little thought for herself.”

Criminology Programme Lead, Nick Drewery, praised Katie for her progress throughout her studies: “Katie joined us back in 2020 and we identified early that she needed to develop her self-confidence. The whole department are so proud of Katie's personal progression and her academic achievements, having attained a First Class qualification alongside her commitment to volunteering with Humberside Police. All her hard work has paid off and we wish her every success as she begins a rewarding career with the force.”

Katie said: “I started volunteering with Humberside Police as part of the work-based learning module of my degree, which gave me valuable skills for my career progression. I’m so proud to have received this award and secured my first paid role. With the help of my tutors, I have gained the confidence to achieve and progress within the police.”

Katie's selflessness and support extended beyond her professional duties. Her efforts to boost team morale, such as baking cakes for staff, demonstrated her dedication to the wellbeing of her colleagues.

Humberside Police expressed their gratitude to Katie for her outstanding contributions and selflessness, stating that her tireless dedication has not gone unnoticed, and her impact on the organisation has been invaluable.

Katie has recently secured a position as a Detention Officer in Custody at Clough Road, where her dedication and skills will undoubtedly continue to serve the community and support victims through case file management.
