Bishop Burton College farm secures food quality standard

12 May 2025 | College

Bishop Burton College’s commercial farm has once again secured Red Tractor accreditation – the UK’s most trusted food standards certification.

The endorsement recognises excellence across every stage of the food production process – from animal welfare and food safety to traceability and environmental stewardship.

It means that produce from Bishop Burton’s farm meets the highest standards in the industry.

Founded in 2000, Red Tractor is the UK’s largest food assurance scheme, championing British farming and supported by over 46,000 farmers and 600 food and drink producers nationwide.

Its logo is one of the most familiar and trusted food marks in the country, giving consumers confidence in the quality and origin of what they’re buying.

Following its latest independent inspection, Bishop Burton College’s 360-hectare working farm has once again demonstrated its commitment to excellence.

Josh Wright, Farm Manager at Bishop Burton College, said: “We’re proud to meet the Red Tractor standards again.

“This accreditation is a testament to the dedication and professionalism of our team and students.

“Supporting British agriculture has never been more important, and buying Red Tractor-assured produce means choosing food that’s safe, sustainable, and produced to rigorous, independently verified standards – right here in the UK.”

As well as producing food to industry-leading standards, the college’s farm is a hub of innovation and learning. From livestock and crop production to cutting-edge precision farming, students gain hands-on experience in all aspects of modern agriculture.

Bishop Burton recently announced a new addition to the farm – a herd of Aberdeen Angus Cross cattle.

The introduction of these animals – which will replace the college’s existing Stabiliser herd – will give students more day-to-day responsibility and enrich their practical training.

This development is part of the college’s mission to equip the next generation with the skills and knowledge they need to succeed in a fast-evolving industry.

Celebrating its 70th anniversary this academic year, Bishop Burton College continues to set the standard in agricultural education – combining real-world farming with academic excellence to help shape the future of British agriculture.
