The college, near Beverley, in East Yorkshire, is introducing around 140 Aberdeen Angus Cross cattle as part of its ongoing mission to provide students with real-world agricultural experience.
The move reflects Bishop Burton’s commitment to preparing the next generation of skilled professionals for the ever-evolving farming industry.
Replacing the college’s current Stabiliser herd of 66 suckler cows and followers, the new cattle will provide students with greater day-to-day involvement.
Unlike the low-maintenance Stabilisers, Aberdeen Angus cattle require more attentive care – offering greater learning opportunities in animal husbandry and farm management.
The cattle will be brought in at around 100kg and reared on-site by college farm staff and agriculture students. They will be raised until they reach 650kg, when they will be sold to food processor ABP in York through the Gamechanger Farming programme.
“This is a significant development for our students,” said Danny Metters, Principal and CEO of Bishop Burton College.
“The increased herd size and the higher level of care the Aberdeen Angus cattle require will provide far more practical experience and valuable insight into livestock management.
“It’s another step in our drive to offer industry-relevant education that truly prepares our learners for their future careers.
“On behalf of the college, I’d also like to say a huge thank you to Stabiliser Cattle Company for their unwavering support over the years.”
