Apprentice Greenkeeper

Salary: £184.80 to £356.40 per week (depending on age)

The Role

Turf maintenance - which includes:

  • Switching and brushing of greens
  • Mowing of tees, greens, surrounds, fairways, banks, semi-rough and rough
  • Scarifying turf and applying top-dressing, pesticides and fertilisers
  • Repairing divots
  • Irrigating and aerating turf
  • Identifying and controlling moss
  • Controlling pests and diseases

Preparation of the Course for play - which includes:

  • Marking of hazards, out of bounds and ground under repair
  • Moving tee markers
  • Maintaining bunkers
  • Changing holes
  • Maintaining course furniture
  • Reporting any damage or unauthorised persons noticed on the course

Machinery - including:

  • Tractor driving
  • Machine maintenance
  • Preparation of machinery for use and for storage, ensuring that any equipment used during the day is cleaned and oiled as required before being, returned to its correct place in the greenkeepers’ shed
  • Reporting any damage or defects to or in the machinery or equipment used

Course construction - including:

  • Laying drains
  • Seedbed preparation
  • Constructing bunkers, tees and greens

Estate Maintenance - including:

  • Establishing and maintaining trees and shrubs
  • Working within the Company’s environmental policy
  • Maintaining the greenkeepers’ shed and surrounding areas in a clean and tidy condition

  • Candidate must be dedicated to completing the apprenticeship qualifications
  • A hard working individual who has a proactive approach to their work with good attention to detail
  • Must have a methodical apprach to new tasks and problems

Personal Qualities

  • Candidate must be enthusiastic
  • Candidate must be confident in dealing with people at all levels
  • Candidate must be punctual and reliable
  • A helpful and friendly approach is essential

Desired Qualifications

  • No experience required as full training will be given
  • No qualifications required as full training will be given but candidate should have basic literacy and numeracy skills and be able to complete the Level 2 Workbased Diploma
  • Candidate will be expected to attend Bishop Burton College on a one day a week basis

  • Weekend work will apply
  • The vacancy is based in a rural area and public transport links are minimal. You will need to ensure that you can access the employer and training provider in line with the hours of work

  • The role will involve working outdoors/in all weathers/ driving agricultural vehicles/using heavy equipment/lifting etc
  • Clothing and safety wear, including boots will be provided
