Ben Watherington

Ben studied with us at college level, before progressing onto our Criminology degree course. He now works in the healthcare sector, and hopes to explore a career within health, but in the prison service.

I originally chose to come to Bishop Burton College as I really wanted to work in the public service sector and found Bishop seemed to be the perfect place. I liked the idea of studying in the countryside and the smaller classes. I used to get the bus into campus which made commuting really easy. When it came to choosing a university, I wanted to stay close to home and knew Nick from a guest lecture he did during the college course. I ended up applying last minute, with support from Nick and got a place!

My favourite thing about studying at UCBB was the small class sizes. It means the lecturers got to you know you on an individual basis and it felt a lot more personal. They were so supportive and were always happy to help no matter what. I found the lectures were actually interesting and engaging, you weren’t just sat there staring at a presentation. We got to make use of the forensics room as well.

During my studies, I worked in healthcare and really enjoyed it. I am now completing an MSc programme in adult nursing and hope to qualify in a few months. I’d really like to explore a health career within the prison service/custody, so I can combine my two interests.

I’d definitely recommend coming to Bishop/UCBB. It’s perfect for those wanting that individual feel as the staff are so supportive. My advice to anyone thinking about coming to UCBB is just do it! The support is second to none, especially compared to other places, you get to meet so many people from different walks of life and it’s been a great experience for me.
