Students working with mzuri drill in Centre for Precision Agriculture

Institute of Technology

As part of the Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Technology, we provide our students with access to cutting-edge agricultural technologies.

The Yorkshire and Humber Institute of Technology (IoT) specialises in delivering higher-level technical skills.

Its mission to improve productivity, reduce skills gaps and support industry growth has been reflected at the college with the launch of our £1.7m Centre for Precision Agriculture.

A collaboration between employers, the college and university level education providers, the IoT is designed not only to future-proof the land-based industries but also the future careers of our students.

Our focus on crops and animals means that students from across our Agriculture, Animal Sciences, Equine and Environmental Conservation faculties all benefit from the IoT, exploring things such as:

  • Transforming food production and reducing emissions
  • Animal welfare within farming practice
  • The environmental impact of land use
  • Environmental issues within conservation and land management

Centre for Precision Agriculture

Our Centre for Precision Agriculture is dedicated to the most forward-looking agricultural technologies. It enables you to achieve high level technical qualifications, focusing on precision farming to transform food production and reduce emissions, pollution, waste and soil erosion.

As an IoT student, you will experience the latest techniques and equipment, including satellite technology, to achieve the best results with the smallest environmental impact.

Take a tour

You'll be able to explore our Centre for Precision Agriculture at an Open Event, but in the meantime why not take a 360° virtual tour?

Ben head and shoulders

Ben Comins, FdSc Agriculture

Subject Agriculture

“Technology is vital to the farming industry in today’s modern world to improve yields, efficiency and farming business in general.

"I have enjoyed everything about learning at the IoT. Precision agriculture is going to be essential to the future of agriculture and for my career."

Nathan Pilgrim, FdSc Agriculture

Subject Agriculture

“The IoT has enhanced my education, allowing me to achieve my dream job.

"We use the McConnel Robocut RC56 for jobs with limited access, such as challenging terrain and hazardous areas where tractors cannot reach. Operated via remote control, we can maintain a safe distance of up to 150 meters.

"The McConnel has a low centre of gravity designed to give it great stability. Speed, gearing, rotor speed and an emergency stop accessed with a single button are just some of the features that can be controlled with controls. It is also compatible with Trimble, another IoT system we use in precision farming."

“The IoT has given me the skills to take back to my arable farm at home.

"We use the Yara N-Sensor, which is a large piece of equipment that attaches to the roof of a tractor. The N-Sensor determines the nitrogen demand by measuring the crop’s light reflectance covering a total area of approximately 50m2 per second.

"With measurements being taken every second, we can accurately communicate to the spreader how much nitrogen needs to be applied to the field which helps us to farm in a way that maximises crop production without being detrimental to the environment."

Our IoT Courses
