Education and Childcare T Level
Duration: Two years
T Levels are an alternative to A levels, apprenticeships and other 16 to 19 courses.
Equivalent to 3 A levels, a T Level focuses on vocational skills and can help students into skilled employment, higher education or higher-level apprenticeships.
These have been specifically designed with employers and businesses to give you a head start towards the career you want.
Your T Level consists of 80% in the classroom and 20% on a 45-day meaningful industry placement, where you can put your newly learned skills and knowledge straight into practice.
What are T Levels?
T Levels are a new qualification designed to give you a head start towards the future you want.
They follow GCSE's and are equivalent to 3 A Levels.
The 2-year qualification brings classroom and work placement together, on a course designed with employers and business.
When do T Levels begin?
At the start of each academic year in September, at selected colleges and schools.
How long does a T Level take?

How long is the industry placement?
An industry placement lasts around 45 days, undertaken as a block or as individual days. The specific lenght of the placement and when it will take place will differ depending on your T Level.
Is this the right path for me?
T Levels are ideal if you have completed your GCSE's and want to get the knowledge and experience to get a skilled job.
Can I go to university after a T Level?
Yes, you can! T Levels get you work ready, but you can continue studying with a higher apprenticeship or degree.
Will they be recognised by Employers?
T Levels are designed with businesses and employers, to make sure you have the skills and knowledge they are looking for in an employee.
What qualifications do I need to be able to study a T Level?
Why would I choose an unpaid T Level over a paid apprenticeship?
T Levels give you the opportunity to experience an industry while you continue your studies, with the opportunity to specialise later. While gaining practical experiencem you also achieve the qualification needed to move into a higher level of study, if you choose to do so later.
Apprenticeships are paid, work-based training for those who know what occupation they want to pursue.

What are T Levels?
T Levels, or Technical Level Qualifications, are a new government backed qualification introduced as of September 2020 and will be equivalent to 3 A Levels. These 2-year courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares students for working life.
T Levels involve a mix of classroom learning (about 80% of the course time) and practical experience (about 20% of the course time) including a 45 day on-the-job placement in a genuine business. Afterwards, students may go on to university, alternative higher education, another job, an apprenticeship or they may be offered an opportunity with the company where they were placed.
T Levels are a vocational alternative to A levels (because they focus on industry) and include practical study as well as classroom learning. They differ from apprenticeships because the study and working time is reversed. Unlike BTECs, T Level courses were developed with businesses and offer an industry placement. It is likely BTECs will be phased out over the next five or so years.
T Levels are a level 3 qualification and provide an alternative to A levels, apprenticeships, IB, BTEC and other courses aimed at 16-19 year olds.
What subject choices are there?
As of September 2021, there are ten T Level subjects available all relating directly to workplace careers:
- Building Services Engineering for Construction
- Design, Surveying and Planning for Construction
- Digital Business Services
- Digital Production, Design and Development
- Digital Support Services
- Education and Childcare (available at Bishop Burton College)
- Health (available at Bishop Burton College)
- Healthcare Science
- Onsite Construction (available at Bishop Burton College)
Six more subjects will be added in September 2022:
- Design and Development for Engineering and Manufacturing
- Engineering, Manufacturing, Processing and Control
- Maintenance, Installation and Repair for Engineering and Manufacturing
- Management and Administration (available at Bishop Burton College)
And another seven from Sep 2023 onwards:
- Agriculture, Land Management and Production
- Animal Care and Management
- Craft and Design
- Hair, Beauty and Aesthetics
- Legal Services
- Media, Broadcast and Production.
How do it work?
T Level courses consist of the following:
- An approved technical qualification specific to the chosen industry area with compulsory elements and, in some cases, optional specialisms
- An industry placement in their chosen industry area (approximately 45 days), which might be offered as day release or as a concentrated block
- A minimum standard in English and maths (if this had not already been achieved).
Students receive a nationally recognised grade and a breakdown of their achievements on the course, including how they did on their work placement. If they don’t pass all elements of their T Level, they’ll receive a T Level statement of achievement outlining what has been completed.
How will be child be graded?
Your child will need to pass all the elements of their T Level to receive a nationally recognised certificate displaying their overall grade and a breakdown of what they have achieved on the course.
The T Level certificate will display:
- An overall grade for the T Level (pass, merit, distinction, distinction*
- A grade for each occupational specialism (pass, merit or distinction)
- A grade for the core component (A*-E)
- Grades / details showing that the minimum requirements for maths and English have been met (level 2 minimum)
- Confirmation that the industry placement has been completed to a minimum standard.
If your child does not pass all elements of their T Level, a T Level statement of achievement outlining the elements that have been completed will be provided instead.
Can my child apply to university after completing their T Level?
T Levels have been designed to provide students with the knowledge, skills and experience needed to progress onto a range of options including work, higher education or apprenticeships. UCAS tariff points have been allocated to T Levels for those wanting to go on to university.
UCAS Tariff points T Level grade ( A level equivalent)
- 168 - Distinction* (equivalent to A*A*A* at A level)
- 144 - Distinction (equivalent to AAA at A level)
- 120 - Merit (equivalent to BBB at A level)
- 96 - Pass - C or above on the core (equivalent to CCC at A level)
- 72 - Pass - D or E grade on the core (equivalent to DDD at A level).
Advantages of taking T Levels
T Levels broaden the study choices for 16 years olds. They can offer a clear path to employment although, should your teen start the course and realise that industry or specialism it is not for them, there are still plenty of options for them to continue higher education or get work in a different industry once the T Level is complete. They are ideal for students who enjoy learning through practical experience and real-life situations.

What is an industry placement?
A student is invited to work with you for around 45 days, developing skills and building confidence. Placement times can be arranged to fit in with your needs.

How do T Levels different from apprenticeships or work experience?
Apprenticeships are jobs with training, for young people who are ready to work. An apprentice spends 80% of their time in paid employment and 20% learning in the classroom.
T Levels are for young people who want to continue studying and gain work experience with a real employer on a worthwhile industry placement. T Level students complete employability training so they understand the demands and expectations of the workplace before placement starts.
Both are very different to school work experience, which lasts 1-2 weeks.
What do I have to do for an industry placement?
We want you to help design a placement that will both benefit your business and teach young people the skills you look for in an employee.
You must make sure the work environment is safe, the student has a line manager to support them and provide appraisal of the student's time on placement.
What support will I get from the College?
You'll receive support at every stage of the process from your partner college, who will make sure that students are ready to be productive members of your workforce.
They will support planning the timeline and objectives of the industry placement.
Do I pay students on industry placement?
There is no legal requirement or expectation that students will be paid, as it is part of a course. However, you can pay students if you wish.

Four GCSEs at grade 4 or C or equivalent, preferably including English and Maths or a relevant BTEC Level 2/First Diploma, plus one satisfactory reference.
However, there may be exceptions and all individual cases will be treated on merit.
Two years full-time. Normally in college three days per week and one to two days in work placement.
Students who achieve this qualification could progress to the following employment in the Childcare sector, including jobs such as:
- Nursery worker
- Teaching assistant
- Learning mentor
- Child minding
- Children’s play centres
- Special educational needs teaching assistant
