The Course

This course will provide you with a broad range of knowledge and understanding about a wide range of animals, whilst preparing you for progression by supporting your development of employability skills or progression onto a second year of Level 2, to top up onto a Level 2 Diploma or continue into employment.

It is designed to serve the needs of all aspects of the animal sector, including companion animals, feeding and watering of animals including aspects of animal linked to the animal management industry and provide the basis for progression into further training, technical and practical skills you will need in your career. You will also have the opportunity to gain vital work experience in local animal businesses to develop industry knowledge and skills, try out the career you have set your sights on.

You will have the exciting opportunity to work with a range of species in our highly prized and industry relevant animal unit, including; cockroaches and crickets, to tortoises in our new Chelonian room, to meerkats, skunks and more. Developing animal handling and husbandry skills and building knowledge about each species you work with in their specialist environments

    • Maintain and develop personal performance
    • Provide controlled exercise theory
    • Provide controlled exercise practical
    • English and Maths, as required.
  • Entry Requirements

    Four GCSEs at grade 2 / 3 or equivalent, or a relevant Level 1 qualification. A satisfactory academic reference is also needed.

  • Duration

    One year study programme, with the option to study a second year to top up to the Level 2 Diploma.

  • Progression

    Students can top up on to the Open Awards Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care.

  • Careers

    The practical skills that are gained and consolidated throughout the course stand you in good stead for joining the animal industry with a strong work ethic and reputation behind you launch your career. Whether it be working in commercial kennels, animal rescue centres, laboratories, zoos and small animal collections. Almost all areas of the animal industry require Experience and Qualifications which you will build on throughout this course.
