The Course

The diverse and fascinating world of animals is growing all the time, making it an increasingly exciting industry to work in.

This programme will allow you to work with otters, wallabies, lemurs, reptiles, amphibians and many more. You will develop practical skills working in our state-of-the-art commercial kennels and grooming parlour.

    • English and Maths, as required.
  • Entry Requirements

    Four GCSEs at grade 3 or D or equivalent, including Science, English and Maths, or a Level 1 qualification in a related subject. One satisfactory reference is also needed.

  • Duration

    One year full-time, normally in college three days a week.

  • Work Experience

    Students undertake one day per week or block week(s) for work experience, and related trips. Practical sessions on the animal unit and kennels also assist with work experience. Students will complete approximately 150 practical hours.

  • How You're Assessed

    Students are assessed through exams, practical work, theory assignments, reports, posters, presentations and lab experiments.

  • Progession

    Students can progress on to one of our BTEC Level 3 in Animal Management courses.

  • Careers

    Work as an animal boarding assistant, pet shop assistant, rescuse centre / animal sanctuary assistant, zoo or wildlife park worker, dog handler, animal / god groomer or an animal charity worker.

  • Equipment Required

    Students are required to have a kennel coat or overalls in blue and a white lab coat*, which are available from our online shop. Steel toe capped footwear is also required. We anticipate this will cost approximately £100.

    There may also be additional costs for educational visits / trips.
