College Rugby Scholarship Student Picked for England

A talented young rugby scholarship student has been called up to represent England for the first time this weekend.

Bishop Burton College sport student Api Bavadra, 18, has been drafted into the England Sevens squad to compete in the HSBC World Sevens Series in Paris, which will be shown live on Sky Sports.

Api’s international call up is testament to his character, dedication and love of the game, according to Bishop Burton’s Director of Rugby, Mike Umaga.

“Api is just one year into our rugby programme and has made huge strides towards fulfilling his potential,” said Mike.

“When he arrived he was a raw talent and we are delighted with how hard he has worked, alongside our coaching staff, to get himself into this position for international honours.

“We are excited to see how Api goes this weekend in Paris and what the next year, and beyond, holds for him.

“The college is delighted to have played a role in Api’s development and to be able to support him play on the world’s biggest stage.”

England are drawn in Pool A and will play series leaders and winners of the weekend’s HSBC London Sevens tournament, Fiji, as well as Ireland and Argentina.

Api also plays for Akuma Hurricanes in the Super Sevens Series, alongside Bishop Burton rugby coach, Tomasi Tanumi.

The college runs a range of sports courses and academy teams. For more information visit sport.bishopburton.ac.uk.
