College and Community Nursery to Pioneer New Childcare Qualification

Bishop Burton College has teamed up with a Hull charity to give students an exciting new opportunity to launch a career in childcare.

The college has partnered with the community nursery, Child Dynamix, to deliver the new T-Level in Childcare.

Students on the course will be given the opportunity to gain important industry experience at Child Dynamix as part of their studies and, upon completion, will be guaranteed a job interview.

Bishop Burton, near Beverley, has been chosen as one of a select few educational institutions to pioneer the new two-year T-Level qualifications, which will launch in September 2020 and will be the equivalent of three A-Levels.

Students will normally be required to have fours GCSEs at grade 4 or above to secure a place, but there will also be a Transition Programme available to those who do not have the required qualifications.

Danny Brett, Assistant Principal at Bishop Burton College, said: “This is a really exciting new development and will provide students with a fantastic opportunity to secure work in the highly rewarding childcare sector.

“They will experience all aspects of the sector, not just the work carried out by nursery practitioners. This means they will have their eyes opened to the numerous career opportunities that exist within the broader childcare industry.

“We are extremely proud to be pioneering this new qualification and this partnership with Child Dynamix will mean students on the course will get real, first-hand experience of the working environment, as well as the opportunity to secure a job at the end through the guaranteed interview scheme.

“We also see this new relationship not only supporting our T-Level students, but those on our Transition Programme too, in the hope we can provide these students with the perfect academic and professional platform to enable them to move on and successfully complete a T-Level programme.”

The T-Level in Childcare will combine classroom theory with practical learning and a three-month industry placement. The qualification has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses to make sure they meet the needs of industry and fully prepare students for work.

Naomi Clark is Head of Childcare Services at Child Dynamix, which is based in east Hull but has premises across the city, and has worked at the charity for 18 years.

She said: “No two days are the same and it makes my day when a young child leaves with a smile on their face.

“T-Level qualifications will be a fantastic step forward in delivering the early years workforce by providing students with the opportunity to have hands-on experience and put theory into practice. The structure, content and learning approach, alongside student support, will offer one of the best qualifications and enable students to progress into the world of work with ease.

“Child Dynamix can tailor the needs of the student with a wide variety of opportunities available through the charity, from early years and education through our community day nursery to family support and mentoring, play, sport and youth teams.”

She added that the guaranteed interview students will be given on completion of the course will be a valuable experience, saying: “A guaranteed interview provides the student with the opportunity to experience this for real, including formal questions, scenarios and on-site practical observation, creating an opportunity for them to demonstrate what they have learnt and know.

“This will all take place with a supportive organisation which always wants to get the best from people during interviews and will include verbal and written feedback for the student – and a potential position for the right candidate.”
