The Course

This course is designed as a platform for you to get a broad range of knowledge and understanding about a wide range of animals over an intensive six month period, whilst preparing you for progression by supporting your development of employability skills or progression onto a Diploma in Animal Management, depending on your career goals.

This course is designed to serve the needs of all aspects of the animal sector, including companion animals, zoological and welfare aspects of the animal management industry and provide the basis for progression into further training, technical and practical skills you will need in your career. You will also have the opportunity to gain vital work experience in local animal businesses to develop industry knowledge and skills, try out the career you have set your sights on!

You will have the exciting opportunity to work with a range of species in our highly prized and industry relevant animal unit, including; cockroaches and crickets, to tortoises in our new Chelonia room, to meerkats and skunks and more. Developing animal handling and husbandry skills and building knowledge about each species you work within their specialist environments, with a critical look at behaviour, habitat and welfare.

This course starts in January 2019.

Entry Requirements

Four GCSEs at grade C or 4 or equivalent, including Science, English and Maths, or a relevant BTEC Level 2 / First Diploma or equivalent. A satisfactory reference is also needed.

Casey spent a year at a sixth form college but did not enjoy the environment there and says she is far happier now she is at Bishop Burton College. She works as a pet sitter to complement her studies.
