Commercial Plant Propagation Apprentice

The Role

  • ­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­­Concentrating on Plant propagation and production – apprentices will gain an in depth understanding of the whole nursery process starting with plant propagation/sowing, through containerisation, nursery maintenance, technical growing skills, pest and disease identification/ resolution to despatch and sales
  • Key skills will be highlighted in each area and will provide the back bone of the training with emphasis on propagation
  • On the job coaching will help individuals develop within the team and to achieve commercial standards in all areas, whilst working safely and efficiently
  • Plant Production Including:
  • Propagation including seed sowing, cuttings, and husbandry
  • Plant establishment/ potting/pruning/plant husbandry
  • Irrigation
  • Plant growth & development
  • Pest, disease and weed control
  • Quality control
  • Logistics / Despatch

  • The successful candidate will need to have the ability to work independently without the need for close supervision
  • The successful candidate will be organised and have a good attention to detail

  • Candidate must be enthusiastic
  • Candidate must be punctual and reliable

Desired qualifications

  • No experience required as full training will be given
  • No qualifications required as full training will be given but candidate should have basic literacy and numeracy skills and be able to complete the Apprenticeship
  • Previous experience in the sector would be beneficial

Things to consider

  • The employer will pay a contribution to your travel costs in addition to the apprenticeship wage
  • Following an initial period your wage may be increased
  • Weekend work may be required in the busy periods (please confirm hours)
  • You will not  need to supply your own equipment.
  • The vacancy is based in a rural area and public transport links are available. You will need to ensure that you can access the employer and training provider in line with the hours of work
  • If you are short listed for this vacancy you may need to attend more than one interview
  • The role will involve working outdoors/in all weathers/standing for long periods/chemicals/heat/cold/heights/underground/ driving/using heavy equipment/lifting etc
