Apprentice Underkeeper/Gamekeeper

The Role

Working on a busy game farm located in East Yorkshire the successful candidate will report owner and be involved the following tasks:

  • Producing chicks and poults for the shooting industry nationwide
  • Reporting to the owner 
  • Feeding of laying birds 
  • Collection of eggs 
  • Mucking rearing sheds 
  • Power washing housing 
  • Bitting pheasants 
  • Catching poults for delivery 
  • Involved with pest and predator control 
  • Regular health checks of the birds 
  • Working to high welfare standards 
  • Maintenance

Personal qualities

  • Candidate must be enthusiastic 
  • Candidate must be confident in dealing with people at all levels 
  • Candidate must be punctual and reliable 
  • The vacancy is based in a small team and the candidate will be expected to work using their own initiative 
  • The candidate must be dedicated to completing the apprenticeship qualifications 
  • We are looking for an enthusiastic individual with a flexible approach to work in a busy work environment 
  • A hard working individual who has a proactive approach to their work, with good attention to detail 
  • Must have a methodical approach to new tasks and problems
  • A helpful and friendly approach is essential

Desired qualifications

  • No experience required as full training will be given 
  • No qualifications required as full training will be given but candidate should have basic literacy and numeracy skills and be able to complete the Level 2 Apprenticeship. (GCSEs grade 2 or 3 (or equivalent) in maths and English are desirable)

Things to consider

  • You will have the option to work flexibly as part of this role 
  • Desirable - full UK driving licence
  • Weekend work is required (to be discussed at interview) 
  • You will need to supply your own equipment (PPE provided) 
  • The vacancy is based in a rural area and public transport links are minimal
  • You will need to ensure that you can access the employer and training provider in line with the hours of work 
  • If you are short listed for this vacancy you may need to attend for an interview 
  • The role will involve working outdoors/in all weathers/dusty/heat/cold/ driving/using heavy equipment/lifting etc.
