Rugby Scholar has 'Huge Impact' on Australia Match

Bishop Burton College Rugby Academy Scholar, Laurence Pearce, was instrumental in Great Britain Rugby League Students’ two-game test against Australian Universities.

Laurence had an impact on both sessions he appeared in. During his first session the students scored 12 points and the game had been turned around. In his second and longer spell, Laurence put in some big hits and some impressive running to again get the students on the front foot.

Head coach Paul Fletcher was complimentary about Laurence’s input.

He said: “Laurence had a huge impact on both games and is definitely one to look out for in future GB matches.”

 

Apprenctice becomes first in UK to be awarded City&Guilds Medal for Excellence in Gamekeeping

Nineteen-year-old Ben Garrick has become the first ever recipient of a prestigious City&Guilds Medal for Excellence in the subject of gamekeeping.

Ben, who has just completed an apprenticeship in Game and Wildlife Management at Bishop Burton College, was nominated for the award by his tutor Norman Dalleywater and will attend a gala dinner in London to celebrate his achievement.

The Medals for Excellence programme recognises and rewards exceptional work by both learners and tutors through their contributions and efforts in the learning environment.
 

 

 

Bishop Burton College Rugby Players selected to represent Yorkshire U20s

Four players from Bishop Burton College’s prestigious Rugby Academy have been selected to represent Yorkshire in the county’s U20s side.

Mark Blenkinsop, Ben Dorrington, Will Robinson and Anthony Maka are all taking Higher Education courses at the College while training and playing for Hull RUFC under the tutelage of Director of Sport, former Saracens and Tongan International Tevita Vaikona. All four are delighted to have been selected to represent Yorkshire.

 

 

 

 

Bishop Burton College student named Farmers Guardian Agriculture Student of the Year

Nineteen-year-old Harriet Clark does not come from a farming background, but that hasn’t stopped her setting her sights firmly on a career in agronomy with a steely determination that has seen her named Farmers Guardian Agriculture Student of the Year.

Harriet is particularly interested in arable farming, focusing on how science can help farming face the challenges posed by climate change and population growth.

She is currently completing research for course projects during her work experience with Syngenta, including a study on the H20 Farms – a UK-based company that specialises in the development and production of products for the hydroponic sector.

Her current practical project is to find a viable solution to the food security and land shortage crisis.

 

Whitby Student takes top award at Bishop Burton College's 50th Anniversary Stockmanship Competition

The UK’s longest-running College stockmanship competition celebrated its Golden Anniversary as Bishop Burton College marked 50 Years of its flagship agricultural event and Whitby student Lauren Nicholson was named Overall Stockperson of the Year.

Lauren (19) of Hutton Mulgrave took the dairy heifer section and so impressed the judges; chair of Holstein UK Bernard Liddle and Master Judge Lord Plumb, that she was named Overall Stockperson of the Year.

 

 

 

 

Gamekeeping student top apprentice in UK by National Gamekeeping Organisation

Ben Pocklington, a gamekeeping student at Bishop Burton College, has become the first ever winner of the Frank Jenkins Trophy for the best gamekeeping student or apprentice of the academic year.
 

The trophy, donated to the National Gamekeepers' Organisation by the family of the late Frank Jenkins as a result of a collection made at Frank's funeral, was presented to Ben today by the organisation's Chairman, Lindsay Waddell on the NGO stand at the CLA Game Fair.


Ben was nominated for the award by his tutor at Bishop Burton College, Norman Dalleywater, and supported by Joseph Nickerson Farms on whose Rothwell Estate he also works as an apprentice.
 

Louth student scoops top Equine Award at Bishop Burton College Stockmanship Competition

Bishop Burton College celebrated the Golden Anniversary of it’s Stockmanship Competition in 2011 and Louth student Jessica Martin was named Equine Stockperson of the Year.

Former John Spendluffe School pupil Jessica (17) of Little Carlton took the award with 16-yar-old Belgian warmblood Finlay.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Bishop Burton students take first place in WorldSkills UK Floristry Competition

Two floristry students from Bishop Burton College are celebrating today after taking first place in their sections of a regional heat of the WorldSkills UK floristry competition.

Chloe Ackroyd and Sarah Stanley are both taking floristry courses at Bishop Burton and were entered into the Advanced and Intermediate sections of the competition that was held at the College. Both Sarah and Chloe made it through to the National finals at Tatton Park Flower Show.
