Fishery Studies

The Fisheries Department is well equipped to train students in all aspects of fisheries management and fish production.
We have a full range of fish surveying equipment including a boat, outboard motors, seine nets and fish finders.
This allows us to undertake fish population surveys in a range of fisheries from small commercial waters to gravel pits of 20 acres or more.
We have undertaken fish surveys for numerous local fisheries and associations including:
Hull and District Angling Association
Appleby Frodigham Angling Club
Springfield Carp Syndicate
Pasture House Fisheries
Burton Constable Hall
Natural England
We are also fortunate to have the River Hull and its headwaters on our doorstep, and have close working relationships with local river keepers.
We regularly work on the West Beck Fishery which is one of the most exclusive fly fisheries in England as well as with the East Yorkshire Rivers Trust on numerous projects.
This year we have undertaken a project with the Environment Agency on the River Rye, this has seen groups of students working in the river with the aim of preventing erosion and increasing sediment flow downstream.
The fisheries students are also called upon to help out on local fish farms, the students have worked at Welham Park Trout Farms, Costa Spring Trout Farm, as well as Preston Carp Hatcheries.
This has involved everything from catching and grading fish through to pond management and feeding.
These links have also lead to the students been able to undertake a wide and varied range of work experience at places such as:
Linear Fisheries
Cemex Fisheries
Sea Life Centre
The Deep
River Ebro (Spain)
Carpvale Fish Farm and Fisheries
Welham Park Trout Farms
Yorkshire Wildlife Trust
On site the college has its own Cyprinid production unit. Here the students work on the care and management of carp and ornamental fish species.
Each year we undertake a breeding programme which sees the students spawning and rearing thousands of young fish, which are then sold on to the ornamental trade.
In this unit the students also learn about feeding strategies and health care as well as filtration design and management.
All of this practical work ensures that our students are given both a wealth of theoretical knowledge which is backed up with excellent practical skills.
