Campus Life

We have a reputation for making you feel welcome from the first afternoon through to the graduation. We take care to ensure that you settle in well and receive all the support that you need to adjust to life in Higher Education.

Campus life revolves around two key areas: sport - which includes the gym, sports hall activities, rugby, football and hockey and of course our brand new bars for both over and under 18s.

ACCOMMODATION

Living in halls is a great way to meet people and make friends in your first year. The majority of first year HE students live in on campus in our modern newly built student village.

We have a dedicated support team within Learner services to ensure all your requirements are met prior to starting your course and throughout your time with us. The accommodation team is also able to advise on housing to let locally and have a list of managed houses, privately owned, rented by the college and sub-let to students. It may take time to adjust to student life, hopefully our accommodation options will ensure you feel at home from the moment you arrive.

Each room contains a bed, desk and wardrobe and ensuite facilities and pc connectivity, so you can run your own computer with full network capabilities. The study-bedrooms on each floor share a kitchen (which includes fridge, kettle, toaster and microwave) and lounge area and there are laundry facilities and parking nearby.

Room Charges

The annual fee is based on the period for which the room is available (ie: term times) and includes all bills. Laundry is not included in this charge. The accommodation is provided throughout the college term and does not include the college vacations

En suite rooms - Each room has its own bathroom with a shower/toilet/wash basin

Reservation Fee

You are asked to pay a reservation fee of £200 with your booking form. This will be converted to the room deposit on commencement of the room occupation. A £25 contribution will be deducted from this fee for Portable Appliance Testing which takes place during the first term.

Accommodation Invoice

Invoices for residential fees will be sent out with your accommodation contract and will cover the academic year. The invoices are paid in instalments of 40% of the annual charge at the beginning of Terms 1 and 2 and 20% at the beginning of Term 3.

PLEASE NOTE - THE FIRST TERM'S INSTALMENT MUST BE PAID PRIOR TO TAKING UP RESIDENCE.

If you decide to withdraw from residency before the end of the academic year you will be required to pay the accommodation fee for the remainder of the year, unless your room is re-let to a student who us not already a Bishop Burton College resident.

If you are in receipt of a residential grant and decide to withdraw, the grant will cease and you will be responsible for the payment of the accommodation for the rest of the academic year.

Laundry

All students have 24 hour access to coin operated washers and dryers. Irons and ironing boards are supplied in each hall for communal use. Please note you will need to bring a duvet, pillow, sheets and duvet cover with you.

Mail

Incoming student mail is distributed from the College Shop and collection requires ID.

Television Licences

Remember, whether you are in college accommodation or rented accommodation you will need a licence for your TV.

Car Parking

Those students bringing cars, motorbikes or mopeds on site can do so free of charge but will need to make contact with the Transport Department on enrolment. Everyone with a vehicle of site is required to display a current pass and must read and comply with the car parking, safe driving and clamping regulations.

Security

The campus operates a 24 hour security which covers the main access to the campus along with CCTV for the safety of our students, staff and visitors.

How to Apply

Accommodation details including a reservation form will be sent out to all applicants who are holding a firm offer of place from May onwards. Applicants accepting after this date will be still eligible for a room subject to availability. Once allocated you will receive an offer of a place on campus along with an Accommodation Agreement to sign and return. No application will be processed unless the £200 reservation fee is included with your application form. This fee is converted into the damage deposit.

There is no guarantee that it will be possible to meet all residential applications as there is heavy demand for places on campus, however we will do our utmost to accommodate you. When all rooms have been allocated, names will be placed on a waiting list for the next available room. If you are unable to take up your room allocation then you must contact the Accommodation Officer before the 4th September of any academic year.

Managed Accommodation

Many of our second and third year Higher Education students live off campus in managed houses. These are situated in nearby towns and villages, are privately owned, rented by the college and then sub-let to the student.

In this case, the legal agreement is between the college and the property owner, with a separate agreement between the college and the student. Prices vary from £1,980 - £2,400 per 10 month let period plus gas, electric and water.

STUDY RESOURCES

Along with the usual internet access and e mail, the college has developed a Virtual Learning Environment which is widely used by students as a place to meet, research, discuss and work online. Our brand new Learning Resource Centre was completed in Summer 2008, the College's flagship building of the redevelopment programme. This centre will provide a range of well designed state of the art learning environments with improved Library facilities and services and a range of new e learning spaces and teaching and tuition rooms - everything you need to help you learn in a variety of new and exciting ways.

SOCIAL & SPORTING EVENTS

Are organised on campus throughout the year and there is something happening every day - from film nights; karaoke discos; pool tournaments and quiz nights. Trips are arranged to the cinema, shopping in York and Meadow Hall and to Hull Truck theatre. Special food themes such as Mexican, Indian and Italian are prepared in Ostlers cafe and for the more adventurous - whole 'weekend away' activities take place throughout the year.

VIBRANT cities, great SHOPPING, brilliant SOCIAL SCENE - all on your doorstep!

Bishop Burton College may be set in some of the most beautiful countryside in Britain, but the vibrant cities of Leeds, Hull and York are just a short car or bus journey away.
