The programme

This very practical programme combines the opportunity of working within the equine industry whilst being paid a wage with training. College attendance is on a day release basis.

Special Features

For the practical work experience an employer is essential – the College can help with finding employment. Employers vary from large commercial establishments to small private yards, including riding schools, competition yards, livery stables and trekking centres. Key skills in areas such as Communication, Application of number and working with others are an integral part of this programme.

The BHS Riding & Road Safety Test, Emergency First Aid and Technical Certificate are included as part of the Apprenticeship.

Apprentices progressing to Advanced Apprenticeships have the opportunity to gain an NVQ in Horse Management at Level 3; a Technical Certificate; Key Skills, Emergency First Aid and one additional occupational qualification.

People who take this course could go on to..

Employment in the equine industry including competition groom, riding instructor, yard manager, apprentice farrier or hunt groom. Many apprentices also progress onto more advanced courses at the college.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements; however some practical experience would be an advantage. Basic riding skills are essential and will be assessed at interview. You will also be required to satisfactorily complete an initial assessment. In addition you should provide two satisfactory references.

Entry to the Advanced Apprenticeship is restricted to those with appropriate background experience and those who are also either working as yard supervisors, or are working towards becoming a yard supervisor.

Duration

This programme lasts between 1 - 2 years depending on the level of apprenticeship taken.
