The programme

The course gives a general overview of animal care and management and concentrates on building a good foundation of knowledge and practical skills for further progression onto other courses or employment within the industry.

  • Introduction to animal science

  • Kennel and cattery husbandry
  • Care of small animals and birds
  • Exotic pet care
  • Small business practices in the land-based industry

Plus 120 hours of work related experience in the land-based sector

Special Features

The Animal facilities here at the College provide you with hands-on experience of a wide range of animals. You will have approximately 16 hours of lessons and practical work each week. Assessment is throughout the year, by a variety of methods including practicals and written work. Learners sit an externally set examination to cover *units1-4, which is completed ‘online’.

There are opportunities to enjoy visits to other establishments to experience and study the facilities at places such as: Tropical World, Crufts, Chester Zoo the Deep, and local kennels/catteries.

People who take this course could go on to..

A Level 3 course (subject to achievement of good grades and references) whilst others follow careers within the Animal Care Industry, working in areas such as Kennels and Catteries, Animal welfare Centres, Pet shops and Veterinary practices.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, though an interest for the subject is essential. Students must demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment at interview. You will also be required to satisfactorily complete an initial assessment. In addition two satisfactory references are required.
