BTEC First Diploma in Art & Design
The programme
This is a practically-based ‘hands-on’ programme providing an excellent introduction to art and design. It explores the creative process from the initial generation of ideas to the realisation of a finished outcome. It introduces and develops some of the skills and knowledge needed to work in the areas of art, craft and design, covering the basic principles and working practices which will bring success and build confidence. Projects reflect the vocational emphasis of this course, relating the learner’s activities to the demands of the real world and to the expectations of the client or audience.

Learners will be given the opportunity to gain skills and experience in a range of specialist art & design areas, visit galleries and undertake study trips to broaden their knowledge of the industry, develop their own portfolio and gain additional vocational qualifications.
People who take this course could go on to..
Work within the art & design industry.
However the majority of learners will choose to continue their studies by moving on to a specialist National Diploma in subjects such as Art & Design, Fashion, 3D Design and Multimedia.
Entry Requirements
4 GCSEs at grade D OR Level 1 qualification in a related subject OR “Life experience” will also be taken into account when considering applications from mature students. In addition two satisfactory references are required.
