The programme

This very practical programme combines the opportunity of working within the animal care industry whilst being paid a wage, with training that leads towards a Diploma in Work-Based Animal Care.

The programme is delivered mainly in the workplace but some college attendance is necessary - usually one day a week.

  • Prepare and Provide Food
  • Control and restrain animals
  • Emergency First Aid (as an extra certificate)
  • Key Skills - Application of Number/Communication

Special Features

For the practical work experience an employer is essential – the College can help with finding employment. You could end up working in a kennel or cattery, a veterinary practice, a pet shop, an animal sanctuary, or welfare organisation.

There is also the opportunity to gain other valuable qualifications.

People who take this course could go on to..

Work in the animal care industry as assistants, operatives and supervisors. Many apprentices choose to join further courses at the College.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements, though an interest for the subject is essential. Students must demonstrate enthusiasm and commitment at interview. You will also be required to satisfactorily complete an initial assessment. In addition two satisfactory references are required.

Duration

The programme can last between 1-3 years depending on which level you choose.
