Foundation Degree in Planning and Development

The programme

This work-based learning degree provides a qualification which enables students to start a career in the area of planning and development. It deals with many of the planning issues which arise during the construction of new buildings and infrastructure projects.

You will gain a holistic background in planning which will place you on the first step of academic study in this area, and will develop the professional and technical skills necessary for this field of work.

The programme is particularly focussed towards those in planning support services in local authority and Government agency planning offices related to town and country planning.

Special Features

The programme is distinctive in various ways. It takes the form of a work-based Foundation Degree, devised in conjunction with local planning employers and is designed to enable the technical and academic upgrading for individual staff who are making a career in planning and development. It provides close linkages between the academic, technical and personal areas of development that are required by local modern planning departments.

The work-based nature of the programme means that much of the learning will be carried out in the workplace through use of work-based projects and mentors. Parts of the programme will be tied in directly to some of the existing elements of workplace learning.

The programme is principally aimed at people who are already working in planning departments of local authorities or similar and who wish to develop their skill in the areas of urban and rural planning and development.

People who take this course could go on to..

An Honours Degree in Planning and Development or similar subject.

Students could also go into the role of technician, administrator, enforcement officer, or planning assistants with local authorities or other Government agencies, or work within environmental/sustainable health or economic development.

Entry Requirements

80 points at Advanced Level (40 at A2) or equivalent

OR National Diploma at PPP

OR

life experience will also be taken into account when considering applications from mature students.

Students need to be employed by, or have obtained a placement with a Local Authority Planning Department or similar prior to starting this course.

Duration

3 years part time with one day per week in college plus additional home study.
