Engineering College Courses

Bishop Burton is a great place to learn the principles and practical skills to work in engineering.

If you want an engineering career, our general and more specialist land-based engineering courses are a great starting point.

Bishop Burton has a dedicated engineering workshop, which replicates industry workshops, so you’ll be well-prepared for work at the end of your course.

You’ll have access to a full range of tools, training equipment (including welding simulators) and machinery, with our expert tutors on hand to help you develop the skills you need.

Depending on the type of course you choose - Level 2, Level 3, an apprenticeship or short course - you can learn the principles of mechanical engineering and acquire practical skills too, such as fabrication and welding.

Land-based engineering

Looking to specialise in land-based engineering? As an agricultural college, Bishop Burton is ideally placed to give you specialist training.

Here, you will work on a range of vehicles, including JCBs, tractors and horticultural equipment, and you can study vehicle engine mechanics and technology, testing, servicing and repair. Our courses also provide opportunities to study agricultural robotics, computer-based imaging and GPS technology.

Hands-on work experience

Work experience will be a significant part of your training. Bishop Burton’s excellent links with engineering businesses provide good scope for securing work placements and employment.

What's more, from September 2024 you can choose our new T Level in Agriculture, Land Management and Production (Land-Based Engineering), where you'll spend 20% of your time on a meaningful industry placement.

Matthew Lowe

Lecturer in Welding and Fabrication

"Before joining Bishop Burton, I was in the Army, working in welding and fabrication with the Royal Engineers, for six-and-a-half years. I also worked in a welding and fabrication factory.

"Everything we do in the engineering department has a real world, practical element to it. As a specialist college, Bishop Burton has its own working farm, so we get real jobs to do from that, working on the machinery. We also get local farms bringing their equipment in as well. The students are all working on real tasks, which provides them with invaluable experience.

"It’s really important to prepare students for industry, so as well as working on practical tasks, we also give them responsibility and treat them like adults."
