NPTC Chainsaw Training
Course Title
NPTC Level 2 Award in Chainsaw and Related Operations: CS30 – Prepare and Maintain the Chainsaw & CS31 – Fell and Process Small Trees.
The Programme
From 5 December 1998 anyone working with chainsaws on or in trees is expected to hold a certificate of competence or national competence award relevant to the work they undertake.
This courses teaches candidates how to safely and effectively operate what are potentially dangerous machines which can cause major injury if used by untrained people.
What You Study
CS30 – Prepare and Maintain the Chainsaw
- Identify, inspect and comment on key parts of the chainsaw
- Prepare the chainsaw for work safely without risk to themselves, other people or the environment
- Carry out daily and routine maintenance on the chainsaw
- Operate the chainsaw safely and effectively and comfortably in accordance with the practical risk assessment
- Operate the chainsaw safely without risk to themselves, other people and the environment
- State the identified knowledge that underpins understanding of operating a chainsaw
- Identify the risk assessment and emergency procedures on a work site
CS31 – Fell and Process Small Trees
- Select and prepare equipment required for safe and effective felling.
- Fell small trees safely and accurately using an appropriate method.
- Remove branches safely in a manner appropriate to the branching habit.
- Crosscut stems accurately and safely to a given length and diameter specification.
- Stack timber using appropriate manual handling techniques.
- Take down small hung-up trees safely using appropriate hand tools
Special Features
Upon successful completion of this course candidates will receive an NPTC Level 2 Award in Chainsaw and Related Operations: CS30 – Prepare and Maintain the Chainsaw & CS31 – Fell and Process Small Trees This qualification is issued for life, however NPTC recommend that refresher training is carried out every 3 - 4 years.
As well as being held at Bishop Burton College this course can be delivered on your own site, using your own equipment ensuring your employees are trained in the environment they are most familiar with and at a time that best suits you.

Entry Requirements
The minimum age for a candidate taking this course is 16. There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification however candidates will be required to supply their own chainsaw and personal protective equipment which should consist of -
- Operational chainsaw
- Chainsaw Safety trousers
- Chainsaw safety boots
- Safety helmet
- Eye and ear protection
- Gloves appropriate for the task
- Non snag outer clothing
- Personal first aid kit*
*Please note this is essential when working with a chainsaw in any setting however it is not essential whilst on the course.
Duration
Each module consists of two days training and one day of assessment (six days in total).
