Course Title
Lantra Sit-Astride All Terrain Vehicles.
The Programme
This course is for anyone who is required to use a sit-astride ATV as part of their work. This would include novices and experienced operators who require their skills up-dating.
Training is a legal requirement. The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 (PUWER) require employers to provide adequate training and to ensure that ATVs are used only by employees who have received appropriate training in their safe use, including towed equipment and attachments. If you are self-employed, the regulations still apply.
What You Study
- Compliance with legal requirements with an emphasis on Safe Practice
- Identification of the risks associated with using a sit-astride ATV
- Selection and use appropriate P.P.E.
- Understanding of the main causes of accidents
- Identification of the controls and components
- Understanding the function of all instruments
- How to carry out daily checks as indicated in the Operator’s Manual
- How to carry out appropriate pre-start checks
- Identification and reporting of any faults
- Starting up and driving over a variety of terrain and ground conditions
- Carrying out a ‘Failed Hill’ climb (full course only)
- Carrying out a Risk Assessment and plan the route
- Operation of the Sit-astride ATV safely on a variety of slopes and terrain (full course only)
- Identification of loading/towing capacities
- Driving with loads and trailed equipment (full course)
- Loading and securing for transport on the road (if appropriate)
- Understanding legal and practical requirements for travelling on the public road
- Identification of track profile and weight transfer
- Loading and unloading the machine from trailer/lorry
Special Features
This course is for companies wishing to develop their employees’ skills in the use of All Terrain Vehicles and to identify their employees as competent operators.
As well as being held at Bishop Burton College, or a nearby site, this course can be delivered on your own site, using your own equipment ensuring your employees are trained in the environment they are most familiar with and at a time that best suits you.

Entry Requirements
There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification however candidates will be required to supply their own Personal Protective Equipment which should consist of :
- Overalls
- Steel toe capped boots
- Helmet
- High visibility vest
Duration
Two days for candidates with little experience. Complete novices may need three days.
