City & Guilds 6302 Preparing to Teach in the lifelong learning Sector (PTLLS)

The Programme

Perhaps you are already teaching and wish to develop your skills – then the Education and Training department offers courses on a part-time basis enabling you to gain the skills and qualifications you need. Many of our graduates go on to work within the learning and skills sector as instructors or lecturers with organisations such as the NHS, prison service, Armed Forces, private training providers as well as the Further Education sector.

PTLLS is an introductory qualification for anyone wanting to train or teach their specialist subject to others. The PTTLS Award is the first step on the teaching qualifications ladders. It is offered at Level 4 on the Qualifications and Credit Framework.
 

Who is it suitable for

This qualification is suitable for anyone who wants to teach or train in the following Lifelong Learning contexts:


• Adult & Community Education
• Commerce, Industry, Public and Voluntary sectors
• Emergency, Public and Uniformed services
• Further, Adult Education and Sixth Form Colleges
• Ministry of Defence/Armed Forces
• Offender Learning
• Private Training Organisations
• Work-based Learning
 

The qualification consists of four units:

• Roles, responsibilities and relationships in lifelong learning
• Understanding inclusive learning and teaching, approaches in lifelong learning
• Using inclusive learning and teaching, approaches in lifelong learning
• Principles of assessment in lifelong learning
 

The course is based on the teaching and learning cycle which involves:

• Identifying the needs of the organisation, the teacher and the student
• Planning sessions and preparing resources
• Assessing students
• Evaluating the teaching and learning process


Students are required to carry out reading research and assignment work in their own time. The course is a blended approach, i.e. face to face taught sessions, group activities and presentations backed up with materials which are assessed via the College’s virtual learning environment (VLE).
All assessments must be uploaded to the VLE electronically therefore students must have internet and e-mail access.
 

Entry requirements

No prior knowledge or experience of teaching is necessary. However, students do need to have a subject in mind that they would like to teach.
