The PTLLS Award is suitable for anyone who is currently teaching, training, instructing or giving presentations to others. It is also ideal for anyone who is not currently teaching but would like to know what it would be like. Anyone can take the PTLLS Award, there is no need to have a current teaching position or any prior knowledge or experience of teaching adults. All new teachers must undertake the PTLLS Award at the beginning of their career and be qualified and/or experienced in their specialist subject. The PTLLS Award is a 'threshold' licence to teach and is the first step on the teaching qualifications' ladder. The qualification consists of five learning outcomes:
- Understand own role, responsibilities and boundaries of role in relation to teaching
- Understand appropriate teaching and learning approaches in the specialist area
- Demonstrate session planning skills
- Understand how to deliver inclusive sessions which motivate students
- Understand the use of different assessment methods and the need for record keeping.
These learning outcomes are then broken down into assessment criteria which differ depending upon the level taken. Level 3 is suitable for everyone taking the Award, however, level 4 is more suitable for experienced teachers who are familiar with academic writing and research. The content of the PTLLS Award is the same whichever level is taken; the difference will be in the amount of work provided for the assessments. The sessions are a mixture of presentations, group discussions and practical activities. The PTLLS Award is a six credit unit on the Qualifications and Credit Framework. This means up to 30 hours of self study must be carried out throughout the course, for example, reading, researching web sites and completing assignment tasks. This in addition to attending all sessions.
