The Programme

This part-time programme is principally aimed at individuals working in the field of planning and development who wish to develop their skills in the areas of urban and rural planning and development.

Many of the planning issues arising from the construction of new and modified buildings and infrastructure projects will be covered. Students will gain a holistic knowledge of the different areas of planning to develop professional and technical skills of those working in the industry.

The range of subjects covered include planning law and developmental control, planning and development practice, local government structure, sustainable development, development and construction, spatial planning, environmental decision making, urban design in practice, rural planning issues and practice.

The work-based nature of the programme means that much of the learning will be carried out in the work place through work-based projects and mentors.

Special Features

This is a work-based course devised with local planning employers and particularly focussed towards those in local authority and Government agency planning offices related to town and country planning. The course is designed to provide technical and academic upgrading for individuals wanting to progress within a career in planning and development.

People who take this course could go on to

Year 3 of the BA in Planning and Development or similar subject. Students could go into the role of technician, administrator, enforcement officer or planning assistants with local authorities or other Government Agencies or work within environmental / sustainable health or economic development.

Entry Requirements

Successful applicants are normally expected to have a minimum of 120 UCAS points at Advanced Level (60 at A2) or Level 3 Extended Diploma or Equivalent plus satisfactory reference plus other any specific criteria agreed at validation. Life experience will also be taken in to account when considering applications from mature students. In the interests of widening participation admissions tutors have discretion to admit applicants with lower qualifications if they can show that they are likely to be successful on the course and an admissions assessment may be used in certain circumstances.
